....and breathe....

.... what an awful, awful, horrid past month or so....

I have been in a right funk!

Those regular followers amongst you will be familiar with my propensity for self deprecating humour.... with a dash of self pity thrown in! Well, the humour "went for a burton" and the self pity turned into something resembling self loathing.... it was ugly!

But with the new year.... and not just any new year.... but my beloved 2011 upon us.... I seem to have turned a corner.

Let me explain.

I have had a very productive week by my standards....

Monday; I managed to drag my sorry arse to see my Doctor to report that I have been really struggling of late. Looking back, there has been a gradual deterioration since my dose of synthetic T4 was reduced from 137.5mcg to 125mcg.

My Doctor listened (shock, horror!) and agreed with my reasoning (shock, horror!) and proposed that I start back on 137.5mcg with immediate effect. Which I have done.

I even ventured so far as to stick my head above the parapet and mention "the letter" I am preparing and my reasons for doing so. I stated that one thing near the top of my list of things to do was to get my testosterone checked.

To my amazement I was told to come back the next morning and have blood samples taken for my thyroid and testosterone!.... knock me down with a feather....

So Monday was a good day.

Tuesday; had blood samples taken.... the nurse even hit a vein first time.... not often the case with my notoriously "shy" veins!

My recently ordered vitamin D3 supplement also arrived.... thanks for the heads up Mary, mwah!

So Tuesday was a good day too.

Wednesday; I basked in the glory of two productive days and went out to the supermarket.

Thursday; I went to see a friend of mine.... for the first time in ten years.... who is at home recuperating after surgery. Human contact is good.... something that has been sadly lacking from my life.

Friday; I called in to see another friend of mine for a chat and a cuppa. I even managed to roll with the punches and deal with broadband and insurance problems without having a complete hissy fit.... I did say complete.... you'd be disappointed in me if I didn't manage to have at least a small hissy fit!.... I didn't let you down.... this time....

I have not heard back from the Doctors regarding my blood tests.... no news is good news right?.... and I really do not want to add Hypogonadism as another string to my Hypo bow! I will call my Doctor's surgery on Monday afternoon just to check.

So. Friday evening I was reflecting on the most productive week in living memory, and trying to solve the riddle!.... WHY?

The only explanation I can come up with is the introduction of Vitamin D3?!?!

I am taking Vitabiotics ultra-D3 optimum strength (2 tablets = 2000iu per day).
http://www.vitabiotics.com/Ultra-D3/

I googled VitaminD3 deficiency and found that many of my underlying symptoms could be attributed to this.

So here I am Saturday morning reflecting some more, and updating you, on what has been an extraordinary week for me!

You know I am a pessimist at heart.... so I am waiting for the crash!.... maybe it won't happen this time.... maybe I have taken a step forward this week.... and maybe this represents permanent progress....

"Definitely Maybe"....

....for those of you interested, Track 5, Columbia, is my fave.... a place in time for me.... and one of my top10 albums of all time!

Do we need to have an intimate understanding of darkness to fully appreciate the light?

My hope has been renewed.... yet again.... I just need to learn where to look.... so here we go....

For as long as there is hope we have a chance!

  1. Congratulations on a good week. Slowly, slowly...An expat friend of mine in HCMC found her depression started to improve when she moved there from her sunshine shy hometown in NZ. She reckoned it was all the Vit. D she was suddenly getting, as well as getting some space from her dysfunctional family

  2. Over 5 years now playing tag between the labwork and thyroid med dosage, trying to get me in a normal range AND stop all my symptoms. Luckily my doc ordered B-12 and Vitamin D this time around. TSH and B12 are normal, but my D was non-existent. The lab ran it twice and also send a sample to another lab to double check. No D could be found at all. It's been less than 2 weeks since I started on 5,000 iu of a different brand of organic natural Vitamin D3, but so far I feel absolutely no better. In fact, for the first time in over 3 years I started having those menopausal hot flashes again and have had even more muscle and joint pains. I guess I just have to give it time. My doc said I may have been deficient since childhood, judging by the knocked-knees, bone deformities in my feet, and other ortho & neurological problems I have. 57 years of damage can't be fixed in a fortnight.

  3. Can you please explain the starting of VitD3? I am hypothyroid, just found out this summer, and after 3 doctors and 3 different pills, we are still trying to get my levels balanced.

    Thank you

  4. Thank you so much for the laughter! I want to also thank Mary Shomon for posting your video on one of her streams & facebook.
I can totally relate to your posting today. December was very very bad for me. Been on the roller coaster for 8 yrs now... You know with as depressed as we can get with these thyroid / adrenal issues it is amazing we are still alive. I really liked the degree's of "hissy fit"...
:-) thanks for bringing a great laugh and smile to my day (which started with 3am heart racing)

  5. Hi there. I'm near you, in Fenland. I have found a GP who is LOVELY. This after over 15 years. It took me that long to get diagnosed, and when I was, my TSH was 450 and my T4 0. Now, my GP has re-referred me, as he thinks (no shit sherlock!) that there is something odd in my TSH being 0.02 and my T4 10. Unfortunately, the referral was to Addenbrooks, who said "you are hyper" (this despite weight gain, hairloss, joint pain, general death). So he's said to me "just see 'em out, get discharged and we'll look at upping dose or changing meds". YAY! He's put me on Eltroxin (I'm on 250mg, despite being 5 ft tall and 8.5 stone: yes, T4 only ain't working). And there has been improvement. He's ok with trying dessicated. PM me if you want to find a nice GP, or get me through my blog:http://fenlandwittering.blogspot.com/2010/10/thyroid-disease-silent-majority.html

  7. I found your blog via Mary's Facebook post as well. I've been living with hypothyroidism most of my life and have only just been officially diagnosed a couple years ago.
Vitamin D can be key in getting well. I thought you might find this link/site helpful:

    http://www.mercola.com/article/vitamin-d-resources.htm

You should always test your Vitamin D levels before supplementing, since you can get too much.

    Keep your head up! :)

  10. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to have found this blog. I just saw your video that was posted on the January is Thyroid Awareness Month page on Facebook.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago and it's been a long road. It still is. Isn't it wonderful when you actually start FEELING better? I had to stop taking Synthroid because it made me worse. I used natural supplements for a long time and then I discovered that gluten was my culprit. It not only cause my hypothyroid, but my vitamin D and iron deficiencies. I still take Vitamin D supplements, but I do well for the most part. I hope things continue to get better for you!

  11. Have you ever heard of Iodine? I cured my hypothyroidism as well as my husbands hyper/hypo thyroidism by supplementing with high dose vitamins and minerals with emphasis on high doses of iodine, I currently take 130mg of iodine daily and slowly built up my dose over the course of a couple months 2 years ago. I have all the info on the website I created with all the information about iodine at TheIodineProject.com check it out. Oh and in case some are thinking that they had their thyroid removed, it can grow back and will if given sufficient amounts of iodine.

  12. have you ever checked out the Wilson's temperature Syndrome site. wilsonssyndrome.com. i was never diagnosed with hypo thyroid until a friend of me turned me on to Wilsons Syndroma and i read the free downloadable book ( please read it Robert, its an eyeopener) and then found the doctor that had studied the protocol. there are several in London and are all listed on the wilsons site. ... i started with a T3 supplement and followed all the protocols .. i encourage anyone who is not getting complete satisfaction from their T4 treatment to log on and just check out the book. lost 40 pounds in like three months ate more, had more energy and really just got my life back.

thank you for your blog, your face and getting well bit by bit.

much good wishes and carry on with courage. a bright day can be yours.
