I Am The Face Of Thyroid Disease....

.... well one of many actually.... and here's my video clip....

In the spirit of honesty and transparency I will explain how it came to be....

Mary Shomon asked if I would be interested in producing a short video clip for an upcoming awareness campaign IAmTheFaceOfThyroidDisease.

The problem I have is no sound recording capability on my laptop or webcam since the accident I had and recorded in the post; Ooops, I had an accident.....

Not to mention stage fright!

That set me to thinking.... yes, it always hurts!.... and from some dark recess of my wondrous mind I remembered a Bob Dylan video (Subterranean Homesick Blues) where he displayed some of the lyrics on placards....

So I had a plan.

I sent the clip to Mary..... and give credit where it's due....  Mary added the beautiful soundtrack.... inspired by the movie Love, Actually....  which became Thyroid, Actually!

We ended up with what I think is an effective video clip.... I hope you'll agree.... there is something about having to read "subtitles" that really makes you "listen".... if that makes sense?

Since being posted on the IAmTheFaceOfThyroidDisease website and numerous facebook pages and YouTube I have had an amazing response.... overwhelming, yes.... but amazing in a positive way!

My heartfelt thanks to every single one of you who has "viewed", "commented", "liked", or discovered that I exist.... I think that's called awareness people!.... and that is what it's all about....

Remember, for as long as there is hope, we have a chance!

  1. This is a wonderful video Robert, very creative and deeply poignant. I hadn't heard of your blog before and now I'm thrilled to have found it, looking forward to reading more posts. I'm hypothyroid too and I also blog about my experiences, funnily enough under the name Hope!

  3. Robert, I found out about your video through Mary's site and after viewing it,wanted to visit your blog. What a wonderful and deeply touching message. I'm hypo as well - and that led to Diabetes 2. Doing well on present regime of armour thyroid and huge amounts of Vitamin D. Thank you for your thoughtful message and for reaching out to the community. I think hypothroidism is very misunderstood by the world at large, but even by many doctors. Thanks for this beautiful contribution.

  5. Great Video! Very touching. I certainly know what you're talking about I'm almost the same age as you, Robert. I have had hypothyroidism since I was dosed with radioactive iodine to 'treat' naturally occurring hyperthyroidism. That was twenty years ago, and yes, what an awful battle it's been. I've always regretted taking that pill! Doctors even now think it was the right thing to do. It's the kind of ailment that doctors do not give much credence, even if they're specialists. You're always 'to blame' for your own symptoms. But at the same time when questioned closely the specialists I've talked to admit they don't know what they're doing at the most fundamental levels. I blog, though not on thyroid issues; I'd say I blog in spite of them!

  7. Robert the "ROCK" !!!
Awesome video & produced by a male, meaning it is comforting to know that thyriod disease it not only a female "THING" as Specialists would like you to believe.
Yes it has been a ghastly battle over here in New Zealand for Thyroid sufferers since Pharmac only bring into this country inferior generic medication. So we keep on keeping on with the toxic bloat, hair loss, fatigue etc etc etc & live in hope xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  8. Robert,
I found your site through Mary too, and am glad I did. I loved your video! I have been suffering with hypothyroid all my life and never knew all the harsh realities that come with this disease. I have never had a doctor REALLY talk to me about hypo. My mother always thought I was a hypochondriac. I am so glad to have found others who know what I have been suffering with all my life. Thank you!!!

  9. Thanks again for the video. It was very wonderful.
BTW, I have over a quarter of a century of temperature charts (I'm serious) and I finally started to try to get help 3 years ago. It took me well over a year to find a doctor in my area who would look at them and take my thyroid problem seriously.
Hang in there. A diagnosis is a good start. I didn't get one till I was 50!

  10. Great video Robert - very touching and a very brave thing to do! Truly wishing you all the best in your quest for recovery - it can happen and it will happen. It can be very hard and at times, very tedious - it does take time but you will get there. The longer you stick with it, the easier it gets (the hardest part is finding a good doctor who agrees to help you - the right way!). I found a good doctor in march 2010 and even now I am not yet 100%. But I can tell you - that once I did find a good doctor who agreed to help me - things have only gotten better and better with the odd hiccup along the way that has always been able to be fixed. I think you will find the same happens with you so hang in there and don't give up hope! :)

  11. ....and you have a nice face Robert :-)

It is also nice to put a face to the blog.

I have been reading your blog for a while now and sometimes post comments under anonymous.

And I am so happy for you, that you have got more publicity and folk reading your blog since posting your video clip. I enjoyed your video, it is a great idea and it made me a bit emotional too. I also think you are brave going public and doing the video. I still go under the name of anonymous and have trouble talking about this disease to those that are close to me.

    Keep up the good work!
